Description:

Preserving the pueblo where a group of Sinagua cliff dwellers once lived, Walnut Canyon National Monument shows off the very different ways of life that existed almost a millennium ago. The Island Trail is the best way to explore these ruins, with a 1-mile round trip path passing 25 different dwellings dated to between 1100 CE and 1225 CE. For a deeper understanding of these dwellings and their past inhabitants, head to the visitors center and museum or sign up in advance for one of the guided tours of the ruins. The monument is about 10 miles by car east of Flagstaff and a short drive south of the Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
